Sussex Squire – The Windmill Block Shiraz – 2022

$34.00

This wine comes from my block next to our old windmill and has always been known as the Windmill Block.

Fruit sourced from a single dry grown vineyard in our north eastern section of the vineyard with an elevation of 455m with a sandy loam and clay soil structure. This small 2.5acre block, produces a lifted elegant style shiraz with flavours of liquorice, raspberry and herbs. The tannins are light but linger on the palate.

Taken from our lower block with a mild 2022 Vintage that let the vines ripen slowly and a delayed harvest helped the fruit develop delicate complex flavours of dark fruit and raspberry notes and a hint of licorice with a light tannin that lingers on the palate. Aged in 20% new and old French Oak for 10 months.

93pts – Halliday (2020 Wine Companion)

From a single 1ha block on a dry-grown estate vineyard, matured for 9 months in French oak (30% new). A classy wine that has taken full advantage of the cool vintage. It’s only light to medium-bodied, but is vibrant and fresh; the fruit flavours are both purple and red, the finish bright and lively.

The Wine FrontCampbell Mattinson

Nine months in old and new French oak, 30% new. 350 dozen produced.

It’s vigorous with fresh fruit flavour and creamy with coffeed oak. It’s more-ish, to say the least. It slips and slides through the mouth, earthen notes tunnelling beneath. It’s $28 well spent.
